Memories of the Body – Chapter 0
Only the body can express all the things we understand in life, all our stories.
Our childhood is the foundation of our lives. All we feel and experience then is still with us. The more sensitive we are, the more difficult it is to let go of the painful memories. The purer our soul, the harder it is to bear with sudden adversities.
In her memoir, Walk Through Walls, the performance artist Marina Abramović writes in regard to experiencing fear for the first time in one’s life: “It is incredible how fear is built into you, by your parents and others surrounding you. You’re so innocent in the beginning; you don’t know.”
Mauro 貓肉先生 hails from Italy, he earned his Master’s degree in dance from TNUA, he used to teach at a university in the US, he played basketball professionally, he’s performed all over the world, and has called Taiwan home for over a decade now.
The first time I watched him perform, I thought “this is the most beautiful body I have ever seen…”. His exquisite movements, the lean lines of his muscles, the full, unhidden expression of his emotions: he embodies his own thinking, his own philosophy.
He often says: “performing is not about what I have to say… it is about what I can allow the audience to feel and experience. The “memories of my body” are not necessarily painful, sad, negative ones: regardless of the content, inspiration and background of the piece, being able to share and present it to an audience makes me happy, it delights me, it is a very positive thing.”
Regardless of the form and shape of the “art”, we must witness it with our body and emotion, rather than with mere rationality. Behind the emotions we witness, behind what we feel is projected at us, are often our own self and body: fear or happiness, positive or negative, they are all the stories we ourselves have lived.
A very special occasion, a very special performance: watch, witness, take Mauro’s body, memories, flesh, skin, breath, senses, and reflect and digest them for yourself. And enjoy a delicious meal!
