At the spring eve of 2017, Haohous gallery invited two international artists to have their dual exhibition. They were Heli Garcia who came from Spain and Ajim Juxta who came from Malaysia. They’ll use their different creative styles for the theme—Reconstruction- Heli Garcia & Ajim Juxta dual exhibition. Although they have distinctive styles, both of them proposed the suspicious attitude and viewpoint, reflecting on traditional values, construction of orders, and ideal society. It’ll be such a different perspective and visual feast.
Heli Garcia, an artist from Spain, graduated from University of Granada with the higher diploma in 2011. The paintings selected for the exhibition belong to three different series of his work, which means quite different paths. The series of decorative objects which conscious of the occidental tradition of still life and the ancient genre of Vanitas painting, this work in the conception of these pieces was to assume and to carry out his role of the maker in order to create ironic games of representation. The older painting titled ’and that was called love’ was the works where he sought in animal world analogies and responded the European economic crisis and the frustrated so-called Spanish revolution in 2011. The encounter points are part of series that he’s currently working on, which reflected on the relationship human nature through the isolation of a precise moment. As these moments evoke memories, everyday situations or topics, they hided mythological references as well.
Ajim Juxta, an artist from Malaysia, graduated from MARA University of Technology, he got the Young ART Award in 2016. For this time, he’ll create the Installation art for this exhibition. His selection was about when in our attempt to attain perfect life and create our own utopia, we are actually building our own dystopia instead that we cannot do anything except to keep on adapting to our environment. We forgot to look deep into ourselves and to create unforgettable memories, and we ignored the importance of experiencing the process of attaining an achievement. He found that through his stay at Taiwan and his travel back to Malaysia had given him time to ponder and find answers or more questions about the monuments we built to prove our very existence and the study paintings came by. All these are based on his imagination of the types of monuments and forms that can prove our existence and express the idea of dystopia under-construction.
The two artists have this opportunity to meet in Taipei together this year. It’ll be such a aesthetic dialogues in this dual exhibition. This is the spiritual collision of these two artists and the intersection of two different cultures.
