plans To Demolish Magnolia Thomas House Delayed
WOODSTOCK, GA — The Woodstock planning Commission on Thursday tabled a request to demolish the structure currently home to Magnolia Thomas Restaurant to accommodate plans to build a group fitness company's corporate headquarters along Arnold Mill Road.

The commission at its Jan. 4 meeting tabled the case so they could get better renderings of the project, said Woodstock Senior City planner Katie O'Connor. The case will come back before the planning Commission at its Thursday, Feb. 1 meeting, she added.
pLAE has petitioned the city to amend a zoning condition on about 2.5 acres at 108 Arnold Mill Road, the site of the restaurant and Magnolia Hall. pLAE is requesting this change to move forward with plans to build a corporate headquarters for its company.
According to documents provided by the city, pLAE plans to demolish Magnolia Hall (formerly known as the Woodstock Community Center) and The Magnolia Thomas Restaurant, named after the Spelman College graduate and Woodstock educator. The house is a reproduction of the historic structure that burned to the ground in 2008.
If approved by the city, pLAE would move from its current office at 105 Towne Lake parkway to the location, and construct two 14,400-square-foot buildings and a demonstration field on the property. One building would be used as office space and furniture store for the lobby and showroom while the second facility would serve as a fitness center.
pLAE specializes in offering personal training in group settings, and its Woodstock studio "is designed to provide professional, education-based coaching, world-class technology, a team-oriented atmosphere, and engaging ground-based programming based on demonstrated science and proven results," according to its website. patch has reached out to Brett Waits, president at pLAE, for details about the company's plans and is waiting to hear back from him.
pLAE's request has received some backlash from residents in the community, including from The Magnolia Thomas Restaurant itself. In a Facebook post published Jan. 4, the restaurant alleges the city "has made plans" to demolish the restaurant and the community center. After serving customers for 15 years, the restaurant said the plans are "a little disappointing to all of us," but the support it has received from its fans has been reassuring.

"While we understand the city's decision to not renew our lease, we are all having trouble understanding their plans for our beloved Magnolia Thomas House," the restaurant added.
It's not that cut and dry, according to Woodstock officials. City Manager Jeff Moon said Woodstock never asked about renewing the restaurant's lease, which expires in May. That lease is currently held with the Woodstock Downtown Development Authority.
Woodstock previously owned the building and leased it to the DDA, which leases out the structure to the restaurant. After the City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement with the DDA to sell the property, the title was transferred to the authority in 2017.
Brian Stockton, the city's economic development director, stressed that the city is not planning to demolish the building, but "the new owner may be." Magnolia Thomas's lease is set to expire after the sale of the property, "making the renegotiation of the lease with the DDA a moot point."
"Given that, the current tenant has never inquired about extending the lease," he added.
